Mr. President, I Still Believe

In light of the recent move in Obama Care to infringe upon one of Americans’ Constitutional Rights, I too, am objecting to the HHS Preventive Care Mandate. This mandate requires all religious institutions to provide and pay for contraceptives and abortion medications through their insurance.

What does this mean? This means that the government tells your church or religious facility to allow the one thing many don’t. For Catholics it’s birth control. They believe strongly that it is God who blesses us with children. They are not some burden for us to decide where and when to have them. Therefore, it is God who gives them to us, and God who can deny them to us. Thus this HHS mandate goes against their “freedom of religion“, forcing them to provide something their doctrine does not allow.

Similar is true for the average Christian in America, though the view on contraceptives may not be as strict. However, the mandate does violate the Christian in that it provides for abortion coverage within the church. As a christian myself, this is something we know as murder. It’s no different to killing a young child of nine, a man or woman in their teens or twenties, or the elderly.

The Lord says, “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, it shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:4)

It is no human right to determine the length of another man’s days, whether full grown, or yet still in the womb. A soul is a soul no matter what stage, and therefore no mistake. We, as people, may have made the mistake of having that child outside of wedlock, or perhaps it was forced upon us by another, but that child is no mistake.

Now before I get off on a rabbit trail here, I say all this to say that the HHS Preventive Care Mandate violates fundamental religious freedom in that it requires religious facilities to violate their own beliefs for the sake of civil government. This we cannot do.

An organization by the name of the Manhattan Declaration has taken a stand on many of these such issues including this one. This organization is calling all to action for the sake of our fundamental rights, both as citizens and as Americans.

Jesus said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” (Luke 20:25b)

The Manhattan Declaration calls for no more than this. To give to government what is the government’s, but to give to God what is His. Jesus gave clear example that while we maybe under a governmental institution we are to obey it, as it is ordained by God—no matter how we view its opinions. The only time we are allowed to take any other action is when government inhibits us from serving God as he has commanded.

In the case of the HHS Preventative Care, as it clashes with these beliefs, the Manhattan Declaration, along with many other organizations has organized a petition to have the mandate shut down. Along with this of course, comes with the idea that should the mandate be instituted anyway, signers would not comply with it as an act of “civil disobedience“.

This is in no way rioting in the street, destroying property etc., but in similar manner to the strikes led by Mr. Luther King Jr. for equality of all races here in the United States. He, too, was a Christian and followed the example set by Christ.

My challenge to you is this:

Go and read the petition the Manhattan Declaration has posted, and don’t just read it, but sign it. Then tell your friends and family about it. Let them read it and sign it as well. There are already well over 35,000 who have but, we need more and particularly believers who stand for God.
